Overview: Stan Cruthers has never met a system he couldn’t out-read. At thirty-one, he’s built an Alabama defense-contracting company on audacity, caffeine, and a frankly unhealthy relationship with the fine print.
Then he clears out his dead grandfather’s garage and finds a box that shouldn’t exist.
A model rocket signed by Wernher von Braun. A combat dagger stamped like government issue. A leather vest shredded by something with too many claws.
Great Grandpa’s bedtime stories about building rockets by day and hunting monsters by night? They weren’t dementia. They were after-action reports.
The trail leads to a Cold War black site on Monte Sano Mountain that the government didn’t close.
They buried it.
A sane man would call someone. Stan mortgages his company, outbids a developer for the land, and starts renting heavy machinery.
He doesn’t go alone.
Carmine is his secretary, his ex, his researcher, and the only person alive who can tell him no—when she feels like it. Chris is his best friend, the mechanic who keeps the plan from killing everyone. And Cathy, Chris’s Wall Street wife, treats Stan’s finances, his boundaries, and his bed as three separate negotiations she fully intends to win.
Chris is rooting for her.
They have the skills. They have the bulldozer. They have a shipping container on the side of a mountain and a sleeping arrangement that stopped being simple weeks ago.
What they don’t have is any idea why the men who built that bunker dumped a mountain of concrete on it and ran.
No reincarnation. No starter powers. Just four grown adults making an increasingly expensive series of decisions.
Stan can negotiate with bankers, contractors, and the Pentagon.
Whatever Great Grandpa left behind isn’t interested in his terms.
