Overview: July 1803. The war with France has resumed, and the Caribbean is about to burn.
Captain Robert Harrison and the frigate HMS Falcon are four months into a hard commission on the Leeward Islands Station when a routine chase ends under the heated shot of a French fort on Tobago. The battery at Castries drives Falcon off, and Harrison can do nothing but watch the Spanish supply ships sail safely under its guns.
Then a captured privateer yields sealed dispatches in cipher, and one is addressed to a French post-captain who has no business commanding a four-gun fort. Something at Castries is worth protecting.
When Harrison finds the wreckage of a British frigate beaten nearly to pieces by a French forty-four, he receives a dying captain’s order: find the heavy frigate Sémillante and bring her to battle, or shadow her until you can. The chase leads him from the Spanish Main through the anchorages of Martinique, with a fever aboard, a ship’s company strained by discipline and loss, and a fort that no frigate can reduce by gunfire.
Harrison’s only chance is an audacious night attack by boats and marines, at the dark of the moon, against a heavy frigate moored beneath the guns of the fort. Some men will redeem themselves in the dark. Others will not come back.
