The Hard-Boiled Detective Stories From Black Mask Magazine 1920-1951 (1977) Anthology by Howard Ruhm (ed)
Requirements: ePUB reader, 0.8mb
Overview: The stories in this collection first appeared in Black Mask magazine, the pulp detective monthly founded by H. L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan in 1920. By 1951, when the last issue came out, Black Mask had been through several owners and editors, and had contributed a new kind of detective story to literature. Until Black Mask appeared, British detective stories comprised the main stream of detective fiction.
Black Mask found that the streets of the cities best reflected the moral disorder of the era. Events were depicted in the language of these streets; mean, slangy, prejudiced, sometimes witty and always tough. It was a language that could “be made to say almost anything” as Raymond Chandler held.
