Overview: Takeshi Kaikō was born in 1930 in the east coast Japanese city of Osaka. From Osaka City University he received a degree in law, in which he originally intended to make his career. Instead he became a foreign correspondent, first at the United Nations and then in Israel, where he covered the Eichmann trial, and Vietnam, where he was briefly detained by the Vietcong. He has been the recipient of prestigious literary awards: the Akutagawa Prize, the Kawabata Prize and the Mainichi Cultural Prize. Kaikō is ranked by Japanese critics, with Kobo Abé, as one of the country’s two most important novelists of the generation since Yukio Mishima.
