Overview: “Crass of 1902” is the German Army designation of the youths who were born in that year and would have been subject to call in 1918. The book is in a sense autobiographical, for Ernst Glaeser himself was born in 1902. He was of the group who were too young to enter the war and yet who suffered untold anguish at home during the most impressionable period of their lives. At present he is one of the editors of the Frankfurter Zeitung.
Class of 1902 is his first book to be published. It has had a phenomenal success in Germany and has been translated into French, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian and Hungarian as well as English.

PRAISE FROM TWO OF GERMANY’S LEADING NOVELISTS;
“An extraordinary work, gripping in its love of truth and its penetrating insight. The life of the middle classes is envisaged with devastating, awful precision, and all its shades of mood are rendered with a craftsmanship amazingly clear and certain.””—Thomas Mann
«The keenness of vision in this book is extraordinary, But even more surprising is the fact that a work so hard, so clearly envisaged, can yet have such warmth and tenderness and can be so marvelously living.’’—Erich Maria REMARQUE
