Overview: Set in in the heart of Michigan, Woodlawn is a small town midwestpopulated with everyday folks. Everybody knows everybody else’s business, and local news is carried daily in the Woodlawn Gazette.
The protagonist is a full-time intrepid reporter and part-time rare book store owner and amateur sleuth Grace “Gracie” Phillips. Gracie has shoulder length strawberry blonde hair, consistently wears casual blouses and a light jacket against the chill, blue jeans and a Chicago Cubs baseball hat turned around backwards on her head. She is accompanied everywhere by a pet detective sidekick, Redford. A full blooded Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Redford has a habit of passing gas at the most inopportune moments, but despite that, is fondly called Reddy by everyone who knows him.
Editor-in-Chief T. Gordon Scott is Gracie’s boss at the Gazette. Typically grumpy and demanding, Scott cares deeply for his reporters and their safety. They affectionately call him “Chief,” a name he openly hates and repeatedly orders them to not call him that.
Skeptical of her investigations at first, local police detective John “Jack” Donne is steady in his pursuit of his investigations. His insistence for maintaining law and order can be a hindrance, but his gradual willingness to listen and learn from Gracie is paramount to closing their cases.
When Jack willingly includes Gracie on his investigations, she grows ever more fond of him despite his outward indifference. With time, they grow into an intimate relationship.
Gracie gets personal advice and memorable quotes from her quirky, elderly aunt named Esther “Aunty Q” Quinn. Aunty Q belongs to a coffee clatch that includes three grannie types, Mildred “Millie” Green, Beatrice “Bea” Thompson, and Matilda “Matti” Warren. The three grannies offer support to Gracie with her cases using bits of relevant gossip and trademark sarcastic and oftentimes poignant quotes.
Gracie owns an old, classic Ford pickup truck she calls Frankenstein, and in her off time she maintains it religiously. Long walks with Reddy and eventually Jack around nearby Crimson Lake are among her favorite past times.
