Overview: A small Australian coast town as it was in the 1930’s or 40’s provides the setting for the story of Paul, a delightfully human small boy, who lives as adventurously in the mind as he does in real life, and of his elder sisters, Hedda and Eve. Life for all three of them swings from one extreme—the boredom of Bible Class attendance, for example— to another, such as the riot in Pa Picconi’s ice cream parlour, and in between come the miscellaneous adventures, some hilariously comic, some exciting, some touching, that are part of the experience of being a small boy living in a simpler, more idyllic time. Paul’s escapades with the Ginsberg children, whose proclivity for getting into trouble amounts to near-genius, with Whopper, his special friend, and with sundry other characters devoted to the pursuit of juvenile enjoyment, provide the episodes through which Paul’s young life is brought vividly into focus.
