Overview: Lorenz F. Heller was born in West Hoboken, New Jersey on October 5, 1910, studied journalism at Rutgers and worked on various New Jersey newspapers. He then ran away to sea and became an able seaman on a freighter before jumping ship and returning to start writing fiction. Heller published his first novel, Murder in Make-Up, in 1937 and continued to write under a variety of names, including Frederick Lorenz, Laura Hale, Larry Heller, Lorenz Heller and Larry Holden, working with publishers like Pyramid, Popular Library, Beacon and Eton Books. He also wrote TV scripts under the name Burt Sims. As Frederick Lorenz he turned out seven sharp crime novels for Lion Books in the 1950s. As Larry Holden he published three crime novels and nearly 100 stories, several of them featuring private eye Dinny Keogh. Heller eventually settled in the Venice, Florida area where he supported himself entirely on his writing. He died on December 12, 1965.
