Overview: YOUNG SUSAN BARR started out sweet, simple and gentle, and ended quite otherwise. She looked back on her former self as a thorough-going little fool, generally, and even while she told herself contemptuously that her trouble was liking to play God, she refused to give up that pleasure. She had not wanted the least bit to be a rich lady author, with all the social success and general fame that goes with that situation, but her first book made her $50,000 in six months and she had to go on writing. What Susan had wanted was to marry Oliver, a nice heel, and live in a comfortable suburban house, bringing up two boys and a girl and doing a little reading and no writing. As it happened, Oliver was out of town most of the time, and Susan put in her evenings between week-ends writing the hit that was her downfall. Oliver had thought her story dull when he had read parts of it, and he was not the type who liked to admit a mistake. So he married the boss’s daughter and she married a former foreign correspondent from whom she learned with great rapidity how to live beyond her means by several thousand dollars a year. There had been one man who was not affected by her success, neither driven off like Oliver nor attracted. The reader suspects all along that he will give her the chance to get off her merry-go-round of strain, the effort of writing as fast as she can to catch up with mortgages and income tax and debts of hangers-on. Susan will be thought a fool by some readers, but others will admire her for her decision. In either case she makes an interesting character study. Leaving her at the age of 30, her chronicle is given with such flowing skill that one would like to read about what happens to her next. It is an extremely personal-sounding story, giving the impression of being about a real woman.
