Overview: “Busybodies, meddlers, minders of other folks’ business – what havoc their good intentions can work! In this story of Social Workers and social rebels, the Uplifters are not alone in their meddling. Money meddles, poverty meddles, parents meddle and children meddle, reformers meddle and their victims meddle too.”

JONATHAN LEONARD, as is now well known, was over fifty when he finished his first novel.
Failing to place it with a publisher, he became a printer and produced an edition by hand, under the title Back to Stay. Later the Viking Press brought out a regular edition, which was hailed on all sides as an indigenous American production of great artistic importance.

Meanwhile he was at work upon a second novel, The Meddlers, here offered complete for the first time. When a part of this story, entitled “Carolus Elston,” appeared in The Second American Caravan, it was singled out for the highest praise by such critics as Harry Hansen, Bertrand Russell, Van Wyck Brooks, Kenneth Burke, Gorham Munson, Alfred Kreymborg.

“Jonathan Leonard is one of the most original and most distinguished literary figures America has been blessed with in a long time. I have no hesitancy in describing Back to Stay as a Cape Cod novel which has never been written before, so unique are its characters, its situations, its plot, and the artistry brought to bear in the unfolding . . . It is a triumph of artistry.” -Alfred Kreymborg.
