Overview: REINHARD Jirgl was born in East Berlin in 1953. While writing was subject to restriction in communist GDR, six completed manuscripts were ready for publication by 1989 when the border between East and West Germany opened. The Fire Above, the Mountain Below and The Unfinished (also published by Seagull Books) are among his most critically acclaimed novels. His work has brought him numerous honours including Germany’s most renowned literary award, the Georg Büchner Prize (2010).
