Overview: Warsaw, 1989. With the Kremlin distracted by Poland’s push to break free from Communism, US journalist Finn Waters pursues the story of a lifetime. To put an end to Russia’s lies that it was the the Nazis who murdered 22,000 Polish officers at Katyn, he slips into the Soviet Union with Mikolai Begitch, a double agent from Belarus, to interview a survivor.
Like all rumors, this one is only partially true. The man was a prison guard who helped murder the Poles. Yes, at Stalin’s orders, but after fifty years he has no documentary proof. His words alone have little value in an empire of lies and if he is named, the Soviets will kill him. So on a frantic gamble, Finn and Mikolai head deep into Russia, tracking the guard’s commanding officer, an NKVD camp commandant. And they strike gold.
What he brings back will free Poland and fracture the Eastern Bloc. It could possibly bring down the Soviet Union. But against all logic, he finds every avenue to get the news out blocked and a target on his back. When even the US state department leaves him dangling, Finn realizes he has become a spy without a country, and he vows to expose how the world’s real political power hides behind the fiction of East versus West.
