Overview: Jack Cady was born on March 20, 1932 in Columbus, Ohio. He was the son of Donald Victor and Pauline Lucille Cady, and had two sisters.
After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1952 to 1956, Cady earned a B.S. from the University of Louisville in 1961.
During the 1960s, Cady was a truck driver, auctioneer, landscaper, social social-security claims representative and editor of the Port Townsend Journal in the mid-1970s.
From 1968 to 1972, Cady taught creative writing at the University of Washington; and he then had a number of brief teaching stints at colleges in Illinois, Pennsylvania and Alaska from 1973 to 1978.
In 1985, Cady began teaching writing at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, and he retired from that job in 1998.
Cady married fellow writer Carol Orlock in 1977, and they remained married until his death.
Jack Cady died on January 14, 2004 in Port Townsend, Washington.
