Overview: Kenji Shiraki travels across a frozen Martian desert to a desolate town to rescue his ex-girlfriend, Jaclyn Lubanski, and her current partner, Lori Dann. Jaclyn has been in a coma-like state since interacting with a “Reef”—a communications node that evolved into a sentient, rogue AI. Kenji warns Lori that the Institute plans to destroy the Reef via orbital bombardment to stop it from spreading. Although Kenji was ostensibly hired by a corrupt corporate executive, Joaquin Bullock, to steal valuable technology from the Reef, he intends to betray his employer to save the women.
