Overview: Somtow Papinian Sucharitkul, commonly known as S. P. Somtow, was born on December 30, 1952 in Bangkok, Thailand. A descendant of the Royal Chakri dynasty (his grandfather’s sister was a cousin and consort of King Vajiravudh), moved to England with his parents in 1953 at the age of six months. Somtow was educated at Eton College and at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge; receiving a B.A. and M.A.
Somtow’s professional arts career began as an avant-garde composer and conductor. He directed the Bangkok Opera Society in 1977-1978, and led the Asian Composer’s Conference-Festival in Bangkok in 1978.
At about the time a music writing block set in, Somtow moved to the United States, and began writing science fiction in 1977, He was published as Somtow Sucharitkul for several years until switching to S. P. Somtow permanently.
S. P. Somtow is increasingly in demand as a conductor specializing in opera and has put his fiction writing on hold. His music repertoire runs the entire gamut from Monteverdi to Wagner. His work has been especially lauded for its stylistic authenticity and its lyricism. The orchestra he founded in Bangkok, the Siam Philharmonic, mounted the first complete Mahler cycle in the region.
