Overview: Hardy Krüger recounts the funniest adventures of his successful acting career with wit and a gentle laugh. In the stories of this collection, “Scenes of a Clown,” the lighthearted reveals as much about life as the serious, without which there would be no comedy. As in his book “Wanderjahre” (Years of Wandering), which recounted memorable and curious encounters, numerous celebrities appear in these tales: directors, producers, and fellow actors, including international stars and admired women, with whom Hardy Krüger made films all over the world—mostly in situations whose humor often borders on the grotesque: James Stewart, for example, swinging from a chandelier like an overgrown boy; Peter Finch, who, along with his friend Hardy, outwits the Soviet secret service’s wiretapping specialists; Richard Burton, holding a different script than his antagonist; Max Schmeling and “Olle Hardy,” arrested in an East German checkpoint barracks until a courageous milk truck driver literally bails them both out.
Thus, alongside other film partners like Yul Brynner, Claudia Cardinale, Richard Attenborough, Robert Redford, and many others, it is often completely unknown people who lend their distinctive character to the clown’s scenes: bricklayers on Hardy Krüger’s farm in Africa, border guards in divided Berlin who, in a Saxon dialect brilliantly rendered by the author, reveal where the wall is most impenetrable—namely, in the minds of bureaucrats, the likes of whom Karl Valentin could not have invented more absurdly.
With his unerring sense for the dramatic effect and the tone of his protagonists, Hardy Krüger transforms all of this into more than just amusing anecdotes; he creates perfectly staged sketches, comedies of mistaken identity with fake and real Krügers, and small, and sometimes larger, dramas of human misfortune and courage…
