Overview: “For a long time, I thought I was the only one in the world who knew Albert Camus, who understood him, and that he wrote only for me. Camus is my father, my brother, my teacher, my friend. He consoles me in the sorrows of life. With him, I never feel alone. I understand him better than anyone. No one had lived what he and I had lived: poverty, the dizzying social gap between our background and the one we entered, the illiterate mother who would never read the books we wrote, the shame, the condescension. But also the painful separation between two countries, two worlds: France and Algeria. I thought he had taken up his pen to tell me: ‘You see, you are not alone.’ Later, I understood that Camus didn’t belong to me alone! There are thousands, millions even, of us who love him. He is one of those who broaden the heart and the mind.” In my life as a journalist, the most decisive moment was meeting his daughter, Catherine, in Lourmarin, in the Luberon. She opened my eyes to the writer, but also and especially to the man who was her father. I consider her my sister. So, I couldn’t have done this “Dictionnaire amoureux” (A Lover’s Dictionary) without her, without her support. I thank her here for her confidences, her generosity, and her hospitality.”

This is an unofficial translation. Although the alphabetical order of some of the dictionary entries is disrupted by the translation from French to English, I have chosen to leave all of the entries in their original position. Translation and cover (adapted from the original) by Rb.
