Overview: Leslie Purnell Davies (L. P. Davies 1914 – 1988) has gained an international reputation for his unusual, highly imaginative novels of psychological suspense, including The White Room, Stranger to Town, Twilight Journey, The Reluctant Medium, and many others. He also wrote many short stories under several pseudonyms, including: L. Purnell Davies, Leo Berne, Richard Bridgeman, Morgan Evans, Ian Jefferson, Lawrence Phillips, Thomas Philips, G. K. Thomas, Leslie Vardre, and Rowland Welch.
Davies’ books often deal with the manipulation of human consciousness, and in some ways are comparable to the works of Philip K. Dick. (The premise of The Artificial Man resembles that of Dick’s Time Out of Joint.) His protagonists frequently suffer from amnesia or other loss of identity, and their quest to find out who they really are drives the plot.
Before he became a writer, he was a postmaster, a painter, an optician, and served with the R.A.F. during World War II. He lived in a small town in Wales with his wife and their white poodle. From his garden, where he grew strawberries, there was an impressive view of Caernarvon Castle.
