Overview: Karen Joy Fowler was born on February 7, 1950, in Bloomington, Indiana, and spent the first eleven years of her life there. Her family then moved to Palo Alto, California.
Fowler received a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1970, attended State University of New York for two years and received an M.A. from University of California, Davis in 1974.
On her thirtieth birthday, Fowler decided to try her hand at writing. To give herself time to write, she negotiated a one-year contract with her husband, but after meeting with little success, she had to renegotiate a five-year contract. Her first published short story, “Praxis” for the March 1985 issue of Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine.
With a multi-award winning career that has spanned forty-one years, Karen Joy Fowler has thus far published eight novels and fifty-four works of short fiction.
