Overview: Harry Harrison (1925–2012) was an American science fiction writer, editor, illustrator, and satirist best known for the Stainless Steel Rat series and Bill, the Galactic Hero. Born as Henry Maxwell Dempsey in Stamford, Connecticut, he served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II before beginning a career in comics and science fiction illustration. His first published story, “Rock Diver,” appeared in 1951.

Harrison became one of the most popular and distinctive voices in science fiction, combining humor, satire, and social commentary. His novel Make Room! Make Room! (1966), a warning about overpopulation and resource depletion, inspired the film Soylent Green. He also collaborated extensively with Brian Aldiss as an editor and anthologist.

A lifelong advocate of Esperanto, Harrison lived in several countries, including Ireland and England. In recognition of his contributions to the genre, he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2004 and was named a Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Grand Master in 2008. He died in Brighton, England, on August 15, 2012.
