Laboratory Manual for Environmental Geocomputation with R by Marcelo de Carvalho Alves
Requirements: .PDF reader, 27.4 MB | True PDF
Overview: This Laboratory Manual complements the textbook Environmental Geocomputation with R, featuring practical applications for natural resource data analysis through hands-on exercises and case studies using the open-source R platform. Its structured workflow enhances students’ understanding of scientific approaches to each case study, teaching them to replicate, adapt, and expand methodologies with new data sets, models, and research areas. Designed for both undergraduate and graduate students in environmental, agricultural, and social sciences, Laboratory Manual for Environmental Geocomputation with R provides a comprehensive foundation in computational environmental analysis while developing transferable skills in data manipulation and visualization.

The idea behind this book is to use classic works of geocomputation and geographic information systems literature, updating them as necessary for today’s world, using the R programming language but without losing sight of the basic concepts of the discipline. This enables one to further expand the use of this bibliography with applications. We have also produced a book that serves as a laboratory manual, with the aim of supporting students in developing a project in the field of geocomputation (halfway through the course) and then writing a scientific article at the end of the course. The part on integration with clouds (Google Earth Engine) is being done with the rgee package, which is already covered in some chapters. In addition to the computational exercises included at the end of each chapter, homework assignments have also been created that can be used to solve geographical problems related to the environmental field. The solutions to the homework assignments are included in the laboratory manual. Some scripts and RMarkdown files are included in a GitHub repository for use by teachers and students who are using the main book and the laboratory manual.
