Overview: Symmes Chadwick Oliver was born on March 30, 1928 in Kenton, Ohio. He spent most of his life in Texas, where, in 1946, he took his MA at the University of Texas (his 1952 thesis, “They Builded a Tower”, was an early academic study of science fiction). He then took a PhD in Anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles, and became professor of anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin. Oliver was twice chairman of the Department of Anthropology of the University of Texas. He was also one of the founders of the Turkey City Writer’s Workshop.
Chad Oliver, his working name for all of his fiction, had his first story, “The Land of the Lost Continent”, published in the November 1950 issue of Super Science Stories. Oliver was always concerned with the depiction of Native American life and concerns: The Wolf is My Brother (1967), which is not sf, features a sympathetically characterized Native American protagonist. Most of Oliver’s sf, too, could be thought of as Westerns of the sort that eulogize the land and the people who survive in it.
Symmes Chadwick Oliver died on August 10, 1993 in Austin, Texas.
