This confession of a Russian landowner’s son, rich with social and cultural detail from tumultuous prerevolutionary Russia, describes Victor X’s early sexual education. A brilliant student, but preoccupied with desires, he ultimately failed at his studies. Sent to Italy by his family he was seduced by two experienced child prostitutes. This introduction led to his fascination with young girls, would-be victims who often turned out to be more experienced than he. Victor X submitted this autobiography to the great sexual historian Havelock Ellis in 1912, who saw to its publication in France. The graphic honesty and extraordinary insights contained in these memoirs gained them an underground following. Here for the first time is the English translation from Russian by Donald Rayfield of the Department of Russian Studies, Queen Mary College, London.
