Overview: ‘Disinformation’ is a word that, as yet, has not entered many dictionaries of the world and, when used, is usually garbed in inverted commas, almost as if to cast doubt on its existence.
Nevertheless, it is gradually being accepted as an increasingly important and disturbing word and in some areas of the world is used straightforwardly as a positive noun. In Soviet Russia it is called dezinformatzia, a word which is often on the lips of those engaged in State services. Indeed, dezinformatzia is an important part of Soviet policy-making. Likewise, the word is also to be found in the Hungarian Official Dictionary of Political Terms, published by the Central Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party, Kossuth Publishers, of Budapest.
This is a book about disinformation in all its many forms and from now onwards the inverted commas can be dispensed with. For this sinister development in everyday life is such that it is liable to appear in the most unlikely quarters.
