Overview: What exactly is a psychopath?
“A mentally disturbed person; one with a I poorly-balanced personality structure.”
That’s one definition, but it doesn’t tell us much. Most of us experience varying degrees of mental disturbance from time to time, even when sitting behind the steering wheel or standing in line at the checkout counter. But the antisocial thought is not the deed, and what constitutes a poorly-balanced personality structure varies from one culture to another.
There are other definitions, plenty of them, though none give us the answer we need. About all they agree on is that a psychopath is capable of committing capital criminal offenses with complete awareness of what he or she is doing, but without any guilt feelings, pangs of conscience, or empathy for victims. In other words, a used-car salesman.
