Overview: I was introduced to the concept of fanfiction, or story variations, six or seven years ago and fell in love with the idea. Of course, I had played out a number of story variations in my head over the years. All the same, I had never thought they were something that could be shared or published because, well, wasn’t that cheating? Apparently not, given the plethora of stories out there.
Happy in my new discovery, I spent a few years reading the various offerings I found that were available for Kindle. Pride and Prejudice came first, followed by variations of other Austen stories and several other books including the Oz stories – OK, that should have given me a clue decades ago, weren’t Ruth Plumly Thompson and heaven knows how many other authors after her really just writing fanfiction? After a while, I collected so many Pride and Prejudice variations I ended up dedicating one Kindle just to them. Eventually, I discovered the fanfiction boards and fanfiction.net, in particular.
Along with all the variations I continued to purchase on Kindle, I read and read the offerings on FFN and Archive of our Own with glee, having such fun seeing the many versions of these stories that other people carried in their heads and released into the wild for all of us to share. Then, one day, it happened. It started with a sentence in my head that would not go away until I typed it out on a nice blank document.
