Breeding My Assistant by Cole Cross (Twice Her Trouble Book 1)
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 193 kb
Overview: Forty-six years old. Two hundred employees. One assistant who chews her pen.
I built Ezenwa Mechanical out of a van and my uncle’s second-hand gauges. What I have to show for it is a corner office I never sit in, a back that clicks on the first three stairs, four pairs of reading glasses I cannot find, and one policy about the people who work for me, which is that I do not.
Then Halyna Sydorenko started putting a coffee on my desk at four minutes past eight every morning. I never ordered it. It was always the one I actually wanted. Twenty-four years old, copper-red hair that goes up at nine and is down again by two, a third button carrying a load it was never rated for, and the specific deadly confidence of a woman who has already decided something.
She decided in week two. It took me four months to notice, and somewhere in there I quietly stopped scheduling anything after two in the afternoon.
The night the servers went down and the building emptied, she came into my office in red lipstick I had never seen on her, sat on my desk, and told me what she wanted. Out loud, in order, and she did not drop her eyes on one item of it. She numbers everything. Item five was the one about not pulling out.
I’m forty-six, I said. I’m too old for this.
She said, “Good.”
Then I said no anyway, and the reason I gave her was her job. She said okay, picked up her coffee and left. At two minutes past seven the next morning she was leaning on my truck in the garage with a box of her desk on the hood, handing me back my own keys and asking whether I had any further objections. Eight hours. It cost her, and she would not let me pay one dollar of it.
I did not have any objections.
Here is what I learned about myself at forty-six. I don’t want to date her. I want to keep her. My house, my bed, my last name, and my hand flat on a belly that is going to be round by Christmas. She says it first, every time, out loud, before it happens, and I make her say it again because I want to hear it twice.
Her ex has opinions about all of it. Trip Wexler has been sitting outside her building in a grey sedan for three weeks and calling from numbers she doesn’t recognise, two hundred and forty-one of them since the twenty-sixth of June. Last Friday he put a hand on her in my own parking garage while I was forty seconds behind an elevator door.
He doesn’t know I take the stairs now.
