Overview: [Provisioner]. The most useless class in the kingdom.
Odric Brannon spent nine years feeding a mercenary company that no longer exists. He can gut a deer in the dark, stretch a sack of barley across forty men, and cook a decent stew standing in the rain. None of that is a combat skill. The guild clerks told him so. Twice.
So he takes his last pay, walks four days east, and buys the burned-out kitchen behind the market square in Bramblecote. Population two hundred. One well. No inn worth the name.
Then he cooks his first meal for someone who is hungry, and the system says something it has never said to anyone.
[Nourished. Permanent.]
Every plate he serves makes the eater a little better, and it never wears off. Every mouth he feeds widens his own pool. There is no cap. There is no ceiling. There is not even a leveling path written down, because nobody in four hundred years has bothered to take the class far enough to find one.
What Odric has instead is a cold stove, a chimney full of birds, a cracked bake oven, and a village that has not eaten properly since the old cook died.
He also has, by the end of the first month: a hill-country maltster who moves her brewing kettles into his back room without asking, a spice trader off the salt road who was only stopping for one night, a former company medic who followed him east and will not say why, and a grey goose with strong opinions about the placement of the salt.
Bramblecote does not need a hero. It needs somebody to keep the fire lit.
But Denhold Gattis is buying every sack of grain and barrel of salt between the valley and the coast, his men are on the road to make sure nobody sells past him, and the first frost is eleven weeks out. Gattis thinks a village that cannot feed itself will sell him the valley.
He has never had to eat his own cooking.
