Passed over for promotion and buried under his family’s debts, museum curator Matthew Thwaite is cataloguing a basement full of forgotten clocks when he finds one that shouldn’t work. One turn of its cap and the world around him slows to a crawl. Another turn, and he can walk through a frozen room while everyone else stands still.
The clock is called the Sand Reckoner, and it comes with an inscription: Fathom the ledger.
Matthew doesn’t understand the warning until the cost starts showing up on his skin. A fine grey dust. Nosebleeds. Gaps in his memory where minutes used to be. Still, he keeps turning the cap, first to save a colleague’s exhibition, then to clear a casino floor of every chip on the table. He tells himself it’s for his family. He stops noticing what it’s taking from him.
He isn’t the only one who wants the clock. Simeon Carillion has spent his life hunting it for the Accelerants, a organisation that has learned how to fold time itself around living minds, and he needs one more piece to finish what he started. He takes the one thing Matthew can’t turn back the clock on: his seventeen-year-old daughter, Jess.
To get her back, Matthew has to go where Carillion works: a facility where consciousness is treated as fuel and reality is one resonance away from collapse. Some debts aren’t paid in money. Some keep being collected long after the bill arrives.
