Fuguai (不具合) translates literally as “abnormality” or “defect,” but carries specific implications in Japanese manufacturing culture. Fuguai refers to any deviation from the ideal state of equipment, even if that equipment continues to function normally.
This represents a fundamental difference from Western maintenance approaches. In Western philosophy, equipment exists in one of two states: functional or failed. If production continues and specifications are met, the equipment is acceptable. In Fuguai-based philosophy, equipment exists in one of two states: an ideal condition or an abnormal condition. Any deviation from the ideal, no matter how small, requires investigation and correction.
