Overview: The Pusadian series is a collection of sword-and-sorcery fantasy tales authored by L. Sprague de Camp, set in a fictional prehistoric continent called Pusad—modeled after the mythical Atlantis (known as Poseidonis)—where magic is portrayed as misunderstood science, and heroes undertake perilous quests amid gods, monsters, and warring kingdoms.
Begun in the early 1950s under the influence of Robert E. Howard’s Conan stories, which de Camp first encountered in 1950, the series represents one of the earliest post-Howard attempts at structured fantasy world-building, blending episodic adventures with historical accuracy in depictions of combat, technology, and ancient cultures. The core narrative revolves around protagonists like Prince Vakar of Lorsk, who quests to thwart divine wrath by seeking an object feared by the gods, encountering Amazons, sorcerers, Gorgons, and mythical creatures across savage lands, ultimately forging an iron sword from a meteorite to repel invaders.
