Overview: Earlene Fowler (born August 23, 1954) is an American mystery novelist best known for her long‑running Benni Harper series, set in the fictional Central California town of San Celina. Raised in La Puente, California, she grew up in a household shaped by two distinct cultural traditions: a Southern mother from an Arkansas cotton‑sharecropper family and a Western father who spent his childhood moving through the American West in a migrant worker family.
Fowler spent more than a decade writing short fiction before turning to mysteries. Her breakthrough came after taking writing classes at Orange Coast College, where encouragement from an instructor led her to submit her first manuscript. Within a week, she landed a three‑book contract, launching her career with Fool’s Puzzle in 1994.
Her 15‑book Benni Harper series blends quilting, folk art, cowboy culture, and small‑town life, earning multiple Agatha Award nominations and a win for Mariner’s Compass in 1999. Beyond the series, she has written the standalone novel Love Mercy and the Ruby McGavin books The Saddlemaker’s Wife and The Road to Cardinal Valley.
Now retired, Fowler lives in Southern California with her husband Allen, her high‑school sweetheart. She remains an avid collector of quilts, folk art, and cowboy boots, passions that infuse the texture and authenticity of her storytelling.
