Overview: Please note this book was previously published as The Third Sin.
On the wild Galloway coast, the tide of the Solway Firth races in across the treacherous mudflats revealing its secrets in the shifting quicksand . . .
One frosty night, a group of young pleasure-seekers ― the Cyrenaics as they call themselves ― meet up in a forest clearing outside the quiet fishing village of Ballinbreck.
After their drug-fuelled revelries, one of their group, Julia, is found dead from an overdose, sprawled on the frost-bitten ground.
Connell Kane, the charismatic dealer who supplied her, is charged with her death. Then his car is discovered abandoned at the Mull of Galloway, a suicide note taped to the wheel. Case closed.
Two years later, after a ferocious storm, the receding waters reveal a battered car stranded on the Solway mudflats ― and the body of a man.
It’s Connell.
But he didn’t take his own life. Someone killed him with a single blow to the back of the head.
DI Marjory Fleming is called in to reopen the case. To uncover the truth, she must track down the scattered Cyrenaics and discover what really happened on the night Julia died.
Because if Connell faked his death, someone helped him vanish.
And someone made very sure he would never come home.
