Overview: Rowan Mercer fixes trucks in his grandfather’s garage in Nebraska, twenty miles from a crater where nothing grows. He has barely enough magic to get into school.
Then, at his entrance exam, he draws a circle and a dragon comes through the ceiling. Summoning has been illegal for 235 years, since the last summoner nearly ended the world. Instead of prison, the dean gives him a room, a supervisor who never leaves his side, and a campus full of women who can’t decide if he’s a threat or a date.
His magic runs on trust. The beautiful, dangerous women who answer his call come by choice, and the closer they get, the stronger he becomes. He has until a hearing at the end of the semester to prove he isn’t the next disaster.
A professor who teaches how to cage creatures like his wants him locked up. The boarded-up building next to his house has monsters crawling out of it. And his grandfather’s only advice, “draw it small,” no longer sounds like handwriting advice.
Rowan was great at keeping old engines from blowing up. Now an entire school is waiting to see if he is the ticking time bomb.
