Overview: The “Dream World” series of stories was an experiment by the Ziff-Davis Publishing Company and the editors of Amazing Stories and Fantastic. It was initiated as a response to the success of the December 1955 and October 1956 issues of Fantastic, both of which ran stories of wish-fulfilment sometimes featuring psi powers. Ziff-Davis created a separate magazine series, Dream World (subtitled “Stories of Incredible Powers”), exclusively devoted to publishing the “wish-fulfilment” and “strange powers” stories. Known then as the “Dream World” stories.
The first issue of Dream World featured a rare, new story by P.G. Wodehouse and an excerpt from a previously-published novel by Thorne Smith, but the magazine generally ran stories by the regular stable of writers who contributed to the Ziff-Davis magazines; notably Harlan Ellison, Randall Garrett, Milton Lesser and Robert Silverberg who contributed competent and sometimes amusing stories, written to order.
Dream World ran for three issues before the Ziff-Davis Publishing Company cancelled the magazine.
