The Sanctuary for Wayward Beasts by Rowan Thorne (The Bramblewick Haven Series Book 1)
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 2.2 mb
Overview: He spent fifteen years tracking monsters for the Capital Guild. Now, all he wants is to brew herbal tea, rebuild fallen stone walls, and care for an orphaned baby gryphon that acts like an oversized golden retriever.
Master Hunter Joshua Vance is done with cold iron, bloodsoaked contracts, and the corrupt politics of the Guild. Cashing in his hard-won veteran pension, he purchases the deed to Bramblewick: an overgrown, long-abandoned farmstead nestled in a tranquil border valley where civilization meets the ancient Whispering Wildwood.
His retirement dream is humble: repair the leaking cedar roof, clear the tangled blackberry briars, tend the heirloom apple orchard, and savor the quiet rhythms of frontier life.
The universe, however, has other plans for the old hunter.
It begins with a weak scratching in the stone barn: a shivering, runt-sized pygmy gryphon with a broken wing and an incurable habit of hoarding polished silver spoons under the mattress. Then comes a miniature hearth-drake with crushed claws who can only fall asleep nestled inside the woodstove ash pan, exhaling gentle puffs of roasted-cinnamon sparks. Before Joshua realizes what has happened, his quiet farmstead has become an accidental refuge for the realm’s most misunderstood, vulnerable creatures.
Partnering with Maeve Lindon, the village’s sharp-witted apothecary whose herbal tinctures and dry banter pierce straight through his gruff exterior, and a warm circle of quirky frontier artisans, Joshua sets out to do the impossible: build the realm’s first official beast sanctuary.
Healing a creature takes far more courage than hunting one.
When an ambitious Capital magistrate arrives with iron transport cages and an eviction notice, Joshua and his newfound neighbors must stand together to prove that gentleness is stronger than iron blades, and that family isn’t something you are born into; it’s what you build with your own two hands.
