Overview: The Future for Creative Writing looks at where creative writing stands and where it may be heading. Graeme Harper works on several time scales. Parts of the book follow what is already in place and still evolving. Other parts ask where creative writing might be in years to come if wider changes in the world affect its practice and understanding in reasonably predictable ways. Some sections imagine future scenarios, and others turn to the past and present to explain why things are as they are and how current conditions will shape what comes next.
The book is also aware of how other fields refer to creative writing, including literary studies, media, art and design, and performance. Harper points to developments in the late 20th century and the first decade or so of the 21st that gave a clearer picture of creative writing as a distinct human practice. That clearer picture matters for how it is taught and researched, especially in higher education.
Harper’s central claim is that the future of creative writing will be built on our lasting human passion for it: our interest in doing it, in producing works, and in engaging with both the act and the result. He notes that many people believe creative writing matters to individuals, societies and cultures. He also cautions that the future won’t let us keep everything as it is today, or shape it entirely as we would like.
