Overview: In the remote Puerto Rican town of Duque, the arrival of a chemical plant promises jobs, stability, and a better future. For teenagers Sandra and Lucas, it brings something more: a chance to build a life together.
But as the years pass, something begins to change. First, workers at the plant fall ill. Then the sickness spreads beyond its walls and into the town itself. Unexplained symptoms become chronic illnesses, and chronic illnesses begin claiming lives.
Amid it all, Sandra and Lucas marry and welcome their son, Adrián. From the beginning, they know he experiences the world differently. With the help of his childhood friend, Isa, and a specialist who diagnoses him as nonverbal autistic, Sandra begins the lifelong process of learning how to navigate Adrián’s world while helping him find his way through hers.
But there’s only one thing that reaches Adrián in a way few others can: spiders.
When Sandra discovers six Goliath birdeaters in a San Juan pet shop, she sees the perfect gift for the son whose fascination with spiders has become a source of joy and connection. She has no way of knowing where the unusual creatures came from-or that they were never meant to leave Duque.
Years earlier, disgraced scientist Emeric Varela arrived in Puerto Rico with secrets of his own. Given another chance to pursue his controversial experiments while serving as manager of Duque’s new chemical plant, Varela quietly resumes the work that cost him his standing in the scientific community. Failure after failure follows, until six Goliath birdeaters finally offer the possibility of something extraordinary.
