Overview: A “Plague of Demons” is a science fiction novel by American author Keith Laumer, first serialized in a shorter version as “The Hounds of Hell” in If magazine in 1964 and published in book form in 1965 by Berkley Medallion. The story is narrated by John Bravais, a special agent investigating the mysterious disappearance of soldiers during battle, only to discover that invisible aliens secretly rule Earth and harvest the brains of fallen human fighters to serve as warriors in distant interstellar conflicts.
Bravais is transformed through advanced surgery into a superhuman operative and becomes the only one capable of perceiving the alien threat while fighting to stop it. The novel blends espionage thriller elements with space opera adventure, featuring fast-paced action, bizarre alien technology, and escalating absurdity characteristic of Laumer’s style. It received a Nebula Award nomination for Best Novel in 1965. Keith Laumer, a former U.S. Air Force officer and diplomat, was known for his prolific output in science fiction during the 1960s, including the popular satirical Retief series and numerous action-driven tales. “The Hounds of Hell”/”Plague of Demons” exemplifies his approach to high-energy plotting and over-the-top scenarios, often incorporating themes of human resilience against overwhelming alien forces, covert manipulation, and the dehumanizing aspects of war.
