Overview: Fired after twelve years. One inheritance: his grandmother’s rooming house, and the rift in its basement nobody ever registered.
Owen Barlow just became a landlord. Not the kind who collects checks. The kind whose tenants grow stronger the moment they sign his lease, and whose rent, paid in monster cores, makes him stronger.
On his own property, Owen enforces the rules. Off it, he’s just a guy with a pry bar.
His first tenants:
Josie, a sword streamer her guild wrote off as dead weight.
Nora, a rift medic who heals by taking the wound into her own body.
Kat, a six-foot-one shield veteran her crew left behind in the dark.
The county wants $38,400 in back taxes by January. A corporate landlord wants the house free and clear. A celebrity guild wants the rift. And the thing behind the iron gate on Floor 5 has waited forty years for its lease to run out.
Rent’s due.
