Overview: Marcel Proust claimed that he had not ‘created’ one of his early autobiographical stories, he had ‘harvested’ it. The same might be said of these stories by Ozaki Kazuo, who ‘harvests’ only what happens to him, only what he knows from direct involvement with life. At times he embroiders with fictive elements some episode he has experienced or some character appearing in the story—the more accurately to convey the truth of what he has seen and felt. Ozaki’s stories are, in fact, so much an effluence of his self that he literally forces the readers to be familiar with his biography, and to appreciate the way the author weaves his stories into one seamless cloth by repeatedly including references to the same or some related incident.
