Overview: The 5G mobile system is a culmination of technological evolution of communication technologies, including IP based services, virtualization, the rise of smartphones, IoT and the convergence of wired and wireless networks. With the evolution of 5G mobile connectivity, its security mechanism needs to adapt to a wide range of users and technological shifts. Based on the requirements in the previous section, the 5G system architecture is designed such that it not only enhances radio performance but also redefines network deployment, orchestration and service agility. 3GPP always defined modular architecture but this has been further enhanced in 5G, and we will cover the radio and core network parts in the following sections. The benefit of the architecture is that the operators can tailor deployments to specific use cases, optimize resource placement and automate lifecycle management. Additionally, 5G uses a cloud-native architecture, which naturally incorporates microservices and containerization. As a result, 5G dramatically changes mobile networks and makes DevOps feasible. As always with 3GPP, the 5G architecture also covers seamless migration from previous generations, i.e. 4G. Other benefits the 5G architecture brings are in the form of network slicing, allowing various parties to have their own share of network services, and partnership business opportunities by opening APIs to external parties. This book provides a simplified view of 5G security, bridging the gap between complex technical standards and practical understanding. As mobile networks have become an integral part of modern society and critical infrastructure, this book is a timely insight into how 5G security is structured, applied and shaped by the technological and regulatory forces.
